The Hazlitt family's connection to this land on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake goes back to 1852, when David Hazlitt purchased a 154-acre fruit farm and planted grapevines by the 1860s. In 1982, brothers Jim and Jerry Hazlitt split the family farm. Jerry went on to found Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. Jim's side of the land eventually became Hector Wine Company, now run by Eric Hazlitt, the sixth generation.

Hector sits in the hamlet of Hector on the eastern Seneca slope, where the shale soils and lake influence produce wines with a distinct savory character. The winemaking style leans toward traditional expression — wines that reflect the place more than the winemaker's hand. Riesling is the anchor, made in dry and off-dry styles depending on the vintage.

The tasting room is low-key and comfortable, the kind of place that rewards repeat visits. Six generations of farming the same land creates a knowledge base that doesn't transfer easily, and it shows in the wines.
