The west bluff of Keuka Lake between Penn Yan and Hammondsport has some of the region's most consistent vineyard sites — southern exposure, lake moderation, shale soils that drain well and stress the vines in productive ways. Keuka Lake Vineyards has been farming this stretch since the early 1980s, and the estate wines show what the bluff can do.

The tasting room sits directly on the hill with views south down the lake. Riesling is the anchor, made in dry, off-dry, and semi-sweet styles to cover the full range of what the bluff produces in different years. Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay round out the portfolio. The approach is straightforward — estate grapes, minimal intervention, wine that tastes like the place it came from.

Keuka Lake Vineyards is one of those spots that regulars return to year after year because the familiarity becomes part of the experience. The view doesn't get old, and neither does a well-made Riesling from a site that's been worked for forty years.
