Sebastian Hardy's great-great-great-grandfather Thomas Hardy left England for South Australia in 1850 and started making wine. Six generations later, Sebastian and his wife Colleen founded Living Roots in 2016 — a winery with a tasting room in the Finger Lakes and production in the Adelaide Hills, connecting two cool-climate wine regions across hemispheres.

Seb grew up in the Hardy wine family and Colleen grew up in the Finger Lakes. Living Roots is the result of that combination — Australian winemaking instincts applied to New York grapes, and New York growing conditions informing wines made in South Australia. The Finger Lakes tasting room is on Keuka Lake, where Seb and Colleen farm their Shale Creek Vineyard.

The wines are made with minimal intervention and a clear sense of what each region does well. Riesling and Cabernet Franc anchor the Finger Lakes production. The project is genuinely bicontinental, not as a marketing angle, but as a way of making wine that reflects where two people are actually from.
