The vines on this eastern Seneca Lake hillside go back to 1974, when early Finger Lakes pioneers from the Champagne region of France planted Chardonnay here — some of the first vinifera on Seneca Lake. The winery opened in 1995, and the old vines have been making wines with unusual depth ever since.

In 2017, Fred and Maressa Merwarth and Oskar Bynke — the same team behind Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard — acquired Standing Stone and brought both properties under common ownership. Wiemer is one of the most respected names in Finger Lakes winemaking, and the stewardship has translated. Standing Stone now makes wines that reflect decades of careful vineyard work: Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Gewürztraminer from old vines that know the slope.

The two wineries operate independently but share a philosophy — estate-grown, site-focused, minimal intervention. Standing Stone is the quieter of the two, which means it's sometimes the more interesting visit.
